We balk at some of the more uninspired themes seen in everyday Drupal sites. Some sites we can't stand, and some contrib themes we want to bury alive. If you've ever found yourself at a loss as to how designers harness their creativity to produce exceptional designs, this is for you.

A freelance Drupal designer with creative experience stretching back to 2001, Preston So specializes primarily in design and consulting in accessibility and usability. Since 2004 he has operated a studio out of Colorado Springs. Preston presented at DrupalCon DC 2009 and manages the Southern Colorado User Group. He's 17 and a rising high school senior.

As with any complex system, the key to using it effectively is to understand it. The purpose of this session is to increase your understanding to get you on your way towards creating a look all your own.

One focus of Drupal 7 has been to empower module developers and theme developers to more easily achieve the look the want for their final output. We added hook_page_alter() where a themer or module developer can alter any part of the page just before it is rendered. At this point, the page is still a raw array that can be easily manipulated.

Moshe Weitzman has been a consistent contributor to Drupal core and Contrib since November 2001 (i.e. before drupal.org was born). As such, he has pretty much touched the whole core code. He maintains the Organic groups, devel, and drush projects, the core bootstrap code, and the groups.drupal.org web site. He is the #1 Drupal developer on Ohloh. He is also a member of the Security team and a Permanent Member of the Drupal Association.

Learn how to theme a site from scratch within about half an hour using the painter module in conjunction with the joker theme - no coding.

Start out with a theme design, cut up the image elements using joker, including logo, page header, footer, blocks, buttons and navigation. Theme page title, primary and secondary links as well as primary and secondary tabs with the painter.

I am a themer and developer for the coolest company on the planet called Telamenta. It's based in Johannesburg, where I studied information technology at RAU, now known as the Univarsity of Johannesburg. I have spent a few years doing design, web development and programming for a couple of big South-African companies.
