Non-unique display names for Drupal

Anybody interested in a BoF for this?
There has been so much discussion over the years regarding non-unique display names for Drupal. Perhaps we should meet up and discuss how it's going to get done face to face?

Interesting... I seem to be spending way to long working round integrating 'realname' and doing custom module work to override core assumptions. Must be more of us who are and could work something out?

Many want non-unique display names into Drupal core!...
It's been a long running discussion. I'm talking years. Start with these... Dave Cohen's recent attempt Allow non-unique display name and sparr's epic Add a Display Name field to core in addition to Username spanning over 2.5 years!
Everytime we are shot down in our efforts but there is a real need for standardisation of how display names work across the system so that modules can co-operate. What is lacking is a understanding of how many people really want this. Looking at the various attempts over the years there are many of us!
