Staying Connected in Paris
I'm hoping this turns into a practical thread on phone and data plans in Paris.
I'm an American iPhone user with an AT&T data plan. Can anyone let us know the ins and outs of using our phones in Paris?
So far, all is know is that every international SMS message costs $.25. I don't even want to imagine what international wireless phone minutes will cost.
Is there an inexpensive option for using CDMA or 3G data plans in Paris?
Does Skype over iPhone work?
In case it helps anyone, I just called Verizon to enable my phone in France and it turns out my phone (and most Verizon phones) will not work there. Their option is to "lend" me a global phone, which isn't too bad if you don't make too many calls. They'll ship you the phone for $10 and for a monthly $5 global value plan, calls are .99 a minute, .50 per text. The return shipping is pre-paid, and there is no rental fee. I guess they're just hoping you'll make a lot of calls!
The last time I was in Paris (sounds like a song), I had AT&T 'enable' my phone for use in Europe, but it didn't work.
I later got a prepaid Virgin phone in the UK. It can be kept & topped up on other trips.
I guess you can do the same in Paris (not suggesting Virgin over others, just as example).
I'm in a similar situation. I'm running a hacked and unlocked iPhone on T-Mobile. Everything I've read so far indicates I'll probably want to buy a prepaid SIM from Orange, called Mobicarte, and rely on wi-fi to get data. Data plans seem prohibitively expensive.
Hi there,
Skype on iPhone works perfect in Europe. We'll be wired with WiFi during the conference full time, and most hotels have wifi access as well. Calling the rest of the World for a couple of cents per minute should not be a problem. Have a Skype account though, with some credit on it. This can be done at www.skype.com with your credit card.
Hope this helps!
